From Superintendent Donald K. Carlisle, Ed.D.

Summer is a great time to find opportunities in the “real world” for your children to learn and grow. With a little help and guidance from you, your children can keep up their academic skills over the summer.

Educational research shows that parents who are actively involved in their children's learning at home help their children become more successful learners in and out of school.

So what can you do to keep your children learning while they’re having fun this summer? There are numerous websites that can give you fun and creative ideas to foster learning over the summer months. Here are a few ideas to try:
  • Reading - Take frequent trips to the library for books you can read with your young children, or for books that interest your older child. Take part in the Summer Reading programs at the Port Chester Public Library.
  • Writing - Have your child keep a summertime journal
  • Science/Health – Plant flower, herb or vegetable seeds and watch them grow. You can plant a garden or grow the seeds in pots on your windowsill. Planting vegetables also helps encourage your children to eat healthfully, as they sample what they grow.
  • The Arts – Take your children to a museum or attend a free concert in the park
  • Math - Let your children plan a trip to the supermarket. Have them write the shopping list, select the best buys, and calculate change from your payment
Westchester County has many educational resources to explore, including Muscoot Farm, many pick-your-own farms and orchards, numerous American Revolutionary Sites, the African American Heritage Trail and more. Have a wonderful summer!
